New York, NY – April 2006– Ever hear that it takes 90 days to break a bad habit? Well, personal trainer Terri Walsh needed to help her busy clients understand and stick to portion control. Enter: NuKitchen, a meal delivery service dedicated to providing healthy convenient and delicious food. They have created a meal service program that provides TWTNYC, www.online-personaltraining-nyc.com clients with a simple 2 meal plan & snacks, freshly prepared, delivered, and monitored – daily.

Terri Walsh, owner of TWTNYC says, “Many of my clients simply have no idea what the proper portion size is nor do they have time to shop and cook. Nukitchen freshly prepares the food using only the highest quality ingredients. However, I control the calorie content of each clients meal. Except dinner, after eating well all day, my clients are NATURALLY eating less at night. Thats breakfast, lunch, and snack(s) delivered directly to their door -5 days per week- for my recommended 90 day plan. On weekends they do as they wish, but most simply stay on the system without realizing it. They become conditioned gradually – and realize they CAN do this on their own, in their daily lives.”

All the NuKitchen meals are pre-cooked so all thats needed is to re-heat in certain instances. Their chefs are highly skilled in the culinary arts, having worked at some of the city’s top food service establishments. Though their cuisine is Mediterranean based, they incorporate global flavors to provide delectable American, Asian, and Latin dishes. Their unique blend of herbs & spices combined with lean sources of protein, heart healthy oils and whole grains, make eating with NuKitchen a truly delicious experience!

ONLINE PERSONAL TRAINING WITH TERRI WALSH
by Paige Waehner from About.com, November 2005

Guide Rating – 4 Stars

TW Training is headed by Terri Walsh, a certified personal trainer who trains people both at her gym in NYC and online. Sign up and you have several options to choose from. At $75/month, the Personal Coaching package includes 2 weekly phone consults with Terri, unlimited emails, and 1-4 programs. The Email Coaching includes unlimited emails and 1-4 programs and costs $45/month. With the Solo DIY you create your own workouts. Choose from 3, 6 or 12 month packages.

Website Features

Whatever package you choose, you’ll have access to many features and resources including fitness articles, an exercise library full of a variety of exercises, a nutrition database, workout calendar, premade workouts, workout log, meal log, progress charts and fitness calculators, just to name a few.

Once you log in, you’ll find links on the left side of the page that take you where you need to go. Your first step is to enter your personal information in the ‘My Account’ Section. Here you detail your goals, vital statistics, schedule, available equipment, cardio exercise preference, fitness level, lifestyle, and health history. Navigation is straightforward and easy, although it would be nice to see the workout and account links closer to the top of the page so you don’t have to scroll.

Once you’ve filled out the paperwork, Terri emails you (you get an alert that you have an email waiting for you) to talk about your goals, workouts, schedule, etc. before creating individualized workouts for you. Terri obviously knows her stuff and is very engaging, enthusiastic and available

Your Workouts

The workouts cover strength training, cardio and flexibility and you can also create class-based workouts like yoga and pilates. When you log onto the website, you’ll be taken right to a calendar that shows the workouts for the week. Simply click on the icon and the workout will open in .pdf format listing all your assigned exercises. For each one, there is a picture and a description as well as details about reps, sets and weights.

Once you complete a workout, you can log it with feedback by clicking on ‘Log Workout’ and choosing the workout you want to log from the list. You also have the option to log your own exercises if you chose to do something else. For each move, you can log sets, reps, weights and comments so Terri can make changes according to your feedback. The logging process requires you to record each exercise separately, which can be a bit tedious and confusing. Once you’ve logged each exercise, there’s no way to see what you’ve entered unless you scroll down to the bottom to view the details.

Logging Your Meals and Tracking Progress

The other main part of the program involves logging your meals. The nutrition database has all the major food groups along with most brands you’d find in grocery stores. To log meals, you simply choose what you ate from the database and enter the amount which allows the system to calculate the calories of each meal. You can also enter new foods that aren’t in the database. Like the workout portion, logging meals can be a bit tedious, especially if you eat some of the same meals each day. It would be nice to be able to copy those regular meals rather than having to go through the database each time.

The progress reports are based on your workouts, meals and body measurement logs. By updating your measurements on a regular basis, you can view charts that show your progress as well as a calorie tracker

Pros and Cons

Overall, the site is easy to navigate with many extras that will keep you entertained for awhile. Terri is engaging and enthusiastic, taking the time to get to know you so she can create the perfect workouts for you. She answers her emails quickly and checks in if she hasn’t heard from you. She has an extensive background in fitness and exercise and knows just the right questions to ask to suss out what you need, where your obstacles lie and how to structure your workouts so you enjoy them and get excited about them.

The prices are reasonable (certainly cheaper than one-on-one training) and, for experienced exercisers who have at least some basic knowledge of strength training, this can be an excellent choice for being accountable and getting individualized workouts to do on their own.

The only minor drawback is the process of logging workouts and the meals. As mentioned above, this is confusing and time consuming. There are a few glitches, occasional error messages and there are some functions that won’t work in some browsers (like Mozilla), so users are better off using Internet Explorer. These problems are minor and don’t interfere much with user experience.

Bottom line? Highly recommended!

MY ONLINE TRAINER
from body + soul, June 2005

I really do want to get in shape. But having never maintained a workout program for more than a day, I thought I’d try a new approach: Web-based online personal training. I signed up for a month with fitness trainer Terri Walsh’s online personal training program, hoping she could help. Walsh runs her own gym in New York City and has the celebrity clients required for any trainer to be taken seriously. Her $75-a-month program (online-personaltraining-nyc.com) includes custom weekly workouts, unlimited e-mail exchanges, and two half-hour phone consultations.

The centerpiece of TWTNYC’s Online Personal Training is the plan that Walsh sends to you weekly – like your own personal Mission: Impossible assignment. She started me on what she called “the basics,” or what I called “the limits of human endurance.” I was to walk a half mile in less than eight minutes, do 90 abdominal crunches (in sets of 10, interspersed with rest periods), do eight minutes of shadowboxing, and build up leg muscles with a regimen of squatting, stair-stepping, and lunging.

I couldn’t have been more intimidated if I’d been asked to sweep up the Sahara. But to my astonishment, I managed to get through the routine without tearing, straining, or breaking anything. I proudly filled in the exercise log to send to Walsh, although I had to admit that I hadn’t been able to complete the half mile in less than nine minutes. Within a half hour she shot back an e-mail with a helpful tip: “Walk faster.”

That was my first day’s lesson in the power of accountability, also known as not wanting to look like a wimp in front of my trainer. It propelled me through a whole series of next days even as the workouts gradually got more challenging. When I inadvertently forgot to send her the log for my abdominal exercise, she was right there with an e-mail asking me about it. And when I finally cracked the eight-minute walk, she sent me a message that read, “WOOO-HOOO!” I’m embarrassed about the glow I felt when I saw that.

I’m now three weeks into the program, and I can see that working with a personal trainer, even a cyber one, definitely pays off. I wonder whether the benefits will provide enough motivation for me to continue long-term. I’m betting 100 crunches on it. – B.G.

TWTNYC ONLINE PERSONAL TRAINING
from Tastes Like Chicken, April 2005

Feeling a little round in the gut? Down in the mouth? Long in the tooth? All right, those don’t all make sense, but Terri Walsh does. She’ll take your sorry excuse for a waistline and help you, well, find it again. And there’s no more excuses either. Don’t have the time to go to the gym? Don’t have any fancy equipment of your own? Neither of those things matter. Terri offers the benefits of your own personal trainer in the convenience of your own home, on your own time.

When you subscribe to her website you join a world of well-being. You start by entering some basic information about yourself (height, weight, some measurements, etc.); then your trainer tailors a workout just for you. Each exercise is explained in detail and is accompanied by demonstration photos. You are also guided through the scary world of nutrition– which, as it turns out, isn’t very scary at all. There is an extensive database of foods and their nutritional value to help you make informed decisions. The best part is that you are held accountable for everything you are doing. There are daily and weekly logs for both exercise and food, so you can do your workouts on your own time. But you’d better keep up, because if you don’t report to your trainer they won’t be shy about calling you on it. I know, because I missed a day or two and got some friendly reminders from Terri.

For additional support, you are invited to sign up for a postboard that discusses health issues related to the program you are in. As if that weren’t enough, you’ll also have recipes, articles, and a monthly newsletter to explore. There are three levels of membership, ranging from $25 a month to $75– the cost depends on how much input you need from your trainer. In my opinion, the more communication you have, the better; it’s great motivation to not only keep on your course, but to progress as well.

The feedback from Terri is firm but friendly, and most importantly, helpful. She feels like an ally, not a drill sergeant. The workouts assigned to me were appropriate for my skill level and progressed at a pace that felt good. They were challenging, but not so difficult that they’d discourage me from continuing.

I came out of my experience with a very positive outlook on how to get and stay healthy. I really think the difference between slowly falling off the good-health wagon and riding it into the sunset is having someone to guide you. The TWTNYC Online Personal Training is a great resource for anyone looking for some self-renewal… with a little help.
