Hi — I’m Terri Walsh, an online personal trainer from NYC now based in Costa Rica, coaching clients all over the world live, one on one, via Zoom. Can a man over 50 still build muscle? The answer is a resounding yes, and I prove it with my clients every week.

Testosterone naturally declines from your mid-30s onward, affecting body composition, energy, and recovery. But that doesn’t make muscle growth impossible, it makes intelligent programming non-negotiable. Strength training for men over 50 needs to account for hormonal changes, recovery timelines, and the cumulative wear that decades of life put on joints. Most generic programs don’t do that. Yes — Terri specializes in online personal training for men over 50, with a focus on functional longevity: endurance, flexibility, mobility, and strength training. Sessions are live, one-on-one, via Zoom, with real-time form correction every session.

Absolutely — and this is one of my favorite things to prove to new clients. Men over 50 can build meaningful muscle with the right programming. Testosterone declines with age, but consistent resistance training stimulates muscle protein synthesis at any age. The key is training intelligently: progressive overload, compound movements, adequate protein, and real recovery. Many of my male clients have made their most impressive strength gains in their 50s and 60s.

Most men over 50 thrive with four structured training days per week — two live sessions with me and two self-directed workouts, or workouts I program for you. Recovery takes longer as we age, so more isn’t always better. We’ll refine this based on your fitness assessment and what the rest of your life looks like.

Functional strength training is the foundation — movements that build the kind of strength you can actually use. I combine compound lifts, kettlebell work, bodyweight progressions, and mobility so you stay capable of everything you love doing, whether that’s golf, tennis, hiking, or just moving through life without limitation.

The difference is my live human eyes on your movement. A good online personal trainer watches you in real time, pays attention and catches the subtle compensations you don’t even know you’re making. Then corrects them before they become injuries. Apps can’t do that. Pre-recorded videos can’t do that. I’ve been coaching live via Zoom since 2014 and the results are the same as in-person because the coaching is just as present.

Yes — and the approach is different than it was at 30. Over 50, building and preserving lean muscle is the most effective fat-loss strategy. Muscle burns more calories at rest and protects joints. I combine resistance training with nutrition coaching tailored to your real lifestyle, whether you’re eating at restaurants every night, traveling internationally, or cooking for yourself.

We work with what you have. Most clients start with a set of dumbbells or kettlebells, a mat, and resistance bands. A pull-up bar and bench are helpful but not required. We can run an effective session with bodyweight alone. After your fitness assessment, I’ll tell you exactly what’s worth investing in.

Since I had gained so much weight for so many years, I had to retrain my body how to move, use muscles and learn balance and form that was much different 120 lbs lighter. Terri perfectly explained what was happening and what I needed to do to apply and improve the movement and functions that had deteriorated over the years. As a physician I was able to apply my medical knowledge with the vast amount of knowledge Terri was sharing with me and everything made perfect sense.
