What is the Active Resistance Training Technique Study?
Hi! I’m NYC Personal Trainer Terri Walsh, creator of the Active Resistance Training® (A.R.T) Method, and I’ve been teaching for 35 years.
Every A.R.T. Method class starts with a warm-up that’s called a ‘Technique Study’. There are 3 levels of Technique Study, today we’ll discuss Tech Study 1.
The tech study is a 10 minute signature sequence of basic fitness movements strung together into a ‘fitness vinyasa’ that serves a few different functions within the Active Resistance Training practice.
– It’s about learning to find engage and maintain the active resistance in the basic building blocks of strength movements that you are familiar with. The tech study teaches you to feel these familiar exercises differently, and to maintain that engagement.
The Technique Study is a cardio workout within your mat practice. This 10 minute sequence ensures that all your most basic fitness movement skills and study are met with this one sequence. It also ensures your heart rate is elevated into the zone necessary for cardio and fat burning so you’re burning fat and increasing your cardio capacity constantly.
– Progress Monitoring – With regular practice you’ll start to realize how strong you’re getting. You’ll have a way to gauge how far you’ve come and you’ll be able to ‘check-in’ and know where your body stands for every workout.
– When you can’t make it to the mat – to CAN do your Tech Study. It’s a snack sized workout that should be done every single day. Try this 10 minute sequence and realize it can be the best way to get your day started!

Who is Terri Walsh?
Terri Walsh is the creator of the Active Resistance Training® Method, a celebrity personal trainer, and a 40-year veteran of the fitness industry in NYC. She now continues her personal training sessions online as well as teaches livestream fitness classes exclusively since her move to Costa Rica in 2014.
Terri was the first Creative Director of Programming at Crunch Fitness and she also headlined five different shows on Crunch Fitness’ ESPN2, including “Washboard Abs” videos. She created the “Yoga Block Workouts,” which were featured in Self, Women’s Health, Shape, Crunch Gyms, and many more. Terri is an ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor and Nutrition Specialist. She’s been interviewed, quoted, and featured in numerous beauty, fashion, print, and television media for the length of her continuing career.
