What is Active Resistance Training?

Hi! I’m NYC Personal Trainer Terri Walsh, creator of the Active Resistance Training® (A.R.T) Method, and I’ve been teaching for 35 years.

My signature use of 2 foam yoga blocks creates a challenging and unique calorie-torching non-destructive intensity called ‘active resistance’. All A.R.T. Method mat classes are entirely non-impact, total-body, joint-friendly, and designed to need only the space of your mat.

– Does Active Resistance Training® burn fat?
Yes! Active Resistance Training burns fat by stimulating lean muscle while also raising your heart rate into fat-burning training zones. Wearing your Fitbit will let you know when you are in cardio & fat-burning zones. The more active resistance you generate, the more energy you’ll expend and the more fat you’ll burn.

– Can I build muscle with Active Resistance Training®?
Yes! Active Resistance Training starts building lean fat-burning muscle by using your body weight at first. As you get stronger, you’ll progress to using additional resistance in the form of dumbbells, ankle weights, and kettlebells to create more of a challenge for yourself.

The high repetition of the mat classes means you’ll develop an endurance-based strength that will leave you with lean, firm age-defying muscle.

Do I need to go to a gym to do Active Resistance Training® Why or why not?
No, you don’t need a gym to do Active Resistance Training®. All you need is your bodyweight and two foam yoga blocks, and a mat. Of course, you CAN do it in the gym and use it with all the equipment there, but it’s unnecessary for stunning results.

– How often should I do Active Resistance Training®?
We suggest anywhere from 3-5 days of practice per week. However, you will get great results by combining your training with other disciplines too!

– Is Active Resistance Training® good for Cardio?
Yes! Active Resistance Training® is entirely non-impact cardio that gets your heart rate into the peak, cardio, and fat-burning zones throughout your mat class.

– Is Active Resistance Training® better than free weights?
We love free weights and use free-weights quite often. You can use Active Resistance WITH all free weights. As far as it being ‘better,’ well, it’s just a different way to use resistance in a mat class setting.

Is Active Resistance Training® good for people over 40?
Yes! Active Resistance Training® is especially good for people over 40. It’s an efficient, intense, non-impact, and joint-friendly way to get everything into one workout: strength, endurance, cardio, mobility, and flexibility. You won’t need ‘extra cardio.’

Is Active Resistance Training® good for people over 50?
Yes! In addition to the benefits above, A.R.T. requires you to focus and concentrate in a focused and meaningful way. Studies show that layering combinations of movements while exercising leads to the brain’s long-term longevity and shores up neurological and cognitive functions. Active Resistance Training® employs weighted and unweighted horizontal to vertical multi-joint sequences to help keep all your senses sharp and your mind tuned in and tuned up!
